Flooring Q&A: Common Questions, Plain Answers

Which floor is most waterproof?

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and porcelain tile are the most water-tolerant common choices. Remember that a waterproof surface does not solve moisture coming up through a slab — the subfloor still matters.

Is engineered hardwood "real" wood?

Yes. Engineered hardwood has a real wood wear layer over a stable plywood-style core, which makes it more tolerant of moisture and humidity swings than solid wood. Solid wood can usually be refinished more times.

What does "wear layer" mean on LVP?

It's the clear protective top layer, measured in mils. A thicker wear layer generally resists scratches and wear better and is worth more in busy households with pets and kids.

Do I need an underlayment?

Often, yes — for cushioning, sound, and sometimes moisture protection. Some LVP comes with an attached pad. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your product and subfloor.

What's the most important step people skip?

Checking subfloor moisture and flatness before installing. Most flooring complaints trace back to what was (or wasn't) done underneath.

Still unsure? Flooring performance depends on your specific home, slab, and climate. Confirm details with a qualified flooring professional before you buy or install.
